In Weeling, West Virginia, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection gave permission to Chesapeake Energy to dump waste at the Short Creek Landfill. They are allowing this to happen because there are protective liners in the landfills at Short Creek which would collect leachate and test on it. However many people are unhappy with this approval. This is because recently, Wetzel County property owners sued Chesapeake Energy for dumping radioactive material into a large hole on their property. Now, Chesapeake is claiming that their waste contains no more radioactive waste. Many are concerned for the quality of their drinking water.

I thought this article was extremely interesting. I am really shocked that the Department of Environmental Protection would allow them to dump waste that recently was reported to contain radioactive material. If I live near this area, I would be furious. This is because the leachate from the landfill would be EXTREMELY dangerous to consumer's health if it was not properly taken care of.

1. Do you think the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection made the right decision?
2. How would you feel if a similar situation happened near us?
3. Would you be surprised if there was an disease outbreak in this area? Why?

  1. The fact that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection let Chespeake dump in Short Creek is quite shocking. The possibly radioactive waste could potentially damage the water supply, so the residents certainly have a right to be angry. It is definitely not okay that they let Chesapeake dump in Short Creek.
    2. If a similar situation happened near us I would be pretty angry. I wouldn't want to have to worry about the risk that my water was contaminated with radiation. No type of radioactive waste should be dumped near a location where a high number of people live.

  2. This is awful. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is crazy. They should not allow a company to dump any kind of waste, especially the waste that might contain radioactive material. The people in that community are scared. I would be too. If I lived in this community I might not ever drink from the tap again.
    2. As I said i would be very angry and want to hurt the people responsible. I wouldn't use my tap water or any water that I think contains this waste. This would truly be an awful situation.

  4. This is very shocking, it is unfair what they are doing. It should be against the law to do something like this. Radioactive material is serious and should not be handled like this. These people should feel protected in their community.
    2. If this situation happened in our community i would feel very unsafe. I would do what the people in Weeling did and sue the West Virginia Department of Environmental Safety.

  5. This is very shocking. I am in disbelief that the Department of Environmental protection would allow this to happen. If the company had been dumping waste that was previously radioactive, why allow them to dump waste at the local landfill. Radioactivity is very serious and people can be seriously injured or harmed. If I lived in this area I would strongly protest the decision.
    1) No this decision could seriously harm the towns inhabitants because they should really further test the waste before making this decision.
2)I would feel like our community was unsafe and like our opinion didn't matter. When making a potentially dangerous decision like this, I think a community should ask it's inhabitants of their opinion instead of deciding whats best when they may not even live there.
3)Yes I would be surprised because we don't really live near a place where there would be a lot of potentially dangerous waste.
